Where we stand‎ > ‎News & Comment‎ > ‎

The reason why Trinidad and Tobago is in this state today, is because we as a people prefer to express ourselves via mediums such as Talk Shows, Facebook, Twitter and Letters to the Editor and as a result refuse to get directly involved in the issues affecting us as citizens.

These postings or conversations, in my view, do not give physical ownership to the thoughts contained therein. So, I would prefer to see all who have suggestions and solutions for our failed political system, which has contributed significantly to all the issues negatively affecting our society, to come forward and identify themselves and do all the things necessary in a meaningful manner, to assist with the process to bring about good governance to our beloved republic and facilitate the process to create a society where everyone counts and there is Social Justice, Prosperity and Equity for all.

We cannot continue like this; writing good articles, engaging in a lot of talk, posting up good ideas, motivational and inspirational quotes and images and expect that this would change our society. It is time that we all walk the talk and stop hiding behind talk shows, letters to the editor, postings on social media, blogs and commentaries, whilst we still continue to support politicians and political parties who have failed us over the years and are in fact responsible for the state of our country.

Additionally: some of these said politicians have no integrity, and have alleged acts of corruption and misbehavior in public office hanging around their necks yet some of us gravitate to them as they portray themselves as the proverbial Robin Hood.

It is time that we as a people stop just liking , agreeing and commenting on face book and other social media and blogs, for in the final analysis we are only giving lip service as we feel we are loyal to a party and don’t want to rock the boat because we are loyalists till we die.

Come on people, we are the owners of the nation and we cannot continue to stand on the white line whilst those we elect into office continue to abuse us time and time again and instead of doing the things necessary to bring about good politics. We just change the colour of our jerseys and vote in another party at election time and expect the problems with crime, indiscipline amongst our young people, corruption, misbehavior in public office, our education system, health system, police service, justice system, roadways, public transport, exorbitant food prices, floods every time the rain falls, inadequate water supply, and local government systems, to be addressed.

Our Society is in Chaos! There is too much disorder, lawlessness and breakdown in family life. This is the hallmark of failed systems and this usually occurs when good people do nothing and allow evil to prosper. We must never forget that we the people have the power; the power to create machines, the power to create happiness and the power to make this life free, beautiful and a wonderful adventure.

Let us use that power. Let us all unite as “Trinbagonians” and not be party fanatics! Let us fight for a new society; a decent society that will give men a chance to work, that will give youth a future and old age a security.

We must also be aware that it is not the critic, not the man who points out the missteps, or where or when things could have been done better who counts; the credit really belongs to those who are actually walking the talk, who are struggling valiantly; who may make errors at times, but still continue to strive against all odds to do the things necessary with great enthusiasm and devotion in order to bring about meaningful change, because they know it is a worthy cause, which can bring about the triumph of high and positive achievement for the society.

If however there is no initial success there is consolation in the fact that they dared to try to change the status quo, so that their place shall never be with those timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat. Talk is cheap but action is priceless. It is easier to say you will do something than to actually do it.

We all have a vision for a better society, but vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world but we will not get change if we wait on others to do it for us. We have to get actively involved in getting what we want, if we really want it. Change comes through continuous struggle so we must stop all the talking, liking, blogging and commenting and work hard for the change we seek in our society.

So people, it is time that we take a greater interest in the politics of our Twin Island Republic and be vigilant over the management of our affairs and the resources of our beloved republic. For too long those we elect to govern us have fooled and deceived us election after election; promising to address issues of social inequalities and economic injustices and all the other ills affecting our society.

On each occasion they have betrayed and failed us miserably. So the ball is now in our court to become actively involved in the Mass Movement so that united we will be able to achieve a society where everyone counts and there is Social Justice and Equity for all.
