TIWU SLAMS PTSC OVER ASBESTOS

posted 8 May 2014, 23:08 by Gerry Kangalee

President of the Transport and Industrial Workers Union (TIWU), Roland Sutherland slammed the management of the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) for refusing to follow the recommendations of Green Engineering, a company that management had hired to look at the asbestos problem in the garage/maintenance area.

Nothing has been done to correct the situation, yet management is trying to encourage, intimidate and bully the workers to return to the affected area. The union is adamant that it will not allow workers to endanger their health and while drivers have been operating from VIMCOTT on the Beetham in order to keep the buses running, the union is insisting that workers will not operate from an unsafe area that is not compliant with the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

Sutherland also expressed anger at PTSC’s “insensitivity” at keeping trainees in the asbestos affected area, the very area they had removed their employees from operating. (SEE VIDEO)
