The National Workers Union (NWU) has forwarded to the Industrial Relations Advisory Committee (IRAC) a policy document, prepared by the NWU, called For a Modern Trade Union Act, for the consideration of the committee.

The remit of the Industrial Relations Advisory Committee includes “advising the Minister on any matter relating to industrial relations on which the Minister requests advice”. The policy paper raises the need for a review of the Trade Union Act to address questions of trade unions’ ability to merge and trade unions’ ability to change their name.

Secretary of the NWU, Comrade Dave Smith in his letter to IRAC said: “I have written to the Minister of Labour and Small and Micro Enterprise Development asking him to refer this issue to your Committee However, I am also forwarding a copy to your Committee as there seems to be no reason why an initiative could not be taken to make suggestions to the Minister on this subject.”
