posted 26 Nov 2012, 14:16 by Gerry Kangalee
The following was taken from the Update sent by the General Secretary of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) on November 24, 2012

Salary Negotiations 2008 - 2011
Week of November 26 - 30

1.) TTUTA thanks teachers for their massive support on Thursday November 22 and Friday November 23. Thousands of teachers (approximately 90%) rested and reflected, sending a powerful message ...

to the CPO, Government and national community that there must be a prompt, just salary settlement for teachers. However, the battle is not yet won;

2.) TTUTA’s Negotiating Team met with the CPO on Friday November 23 in another whole day session which ended around 8:45pm. No settlement was reached;

3.) At this session, the CPO rejected TTUTA’s latest proposal and refused to advance any new salary proposal;

4.) TTUTA rejected the CPO’s last salary proposal and maintained its current position;

5.) Consistent with the decision of the General Council, TTUTA calls on all teachers to join a massive protest march through the streets of Port of Spain on Thursday November 29, 2012;

6.) Teachers are to assemble on Brian Lara Promenade between Chacon and Abercromby Streets, Port of Spain, from 12:30pm, for the march beginning at 1:30pm. Contact your District Executives for transport arrangements:

7.) The CPO’s last salary proposal, derived from the External Labour Market (ELM) Survey, amounts to average salary increases across the grades of about 8.5%. In particular, the CPO’s proposal shows the following:

i) Grade 3 (T I/TVT II/TVT III/T II) $670 monthly increase before tax at the Minimum Point or a salary of about 82% of the ELM figure;

ii) Grade 4 (T III/TVT IV/Sen T) $837 monthly increase before tax at the Minimum Point or a salary of about 81% of the ELM figure;

iii) Grade 7 (P (Prim), VP (Sec)) $1148 monthly increase before tax at the Minimum Point or a salary of about 68% of the ELM figure.

8.) Another whole day negotiation session is set for Friday November 30;

9.) TTUTA’s last salary proposal, derived from the ELM Survey, amounts to average salary increases across the grades of about 13%. In particular, TTUTA’s proposal shows the following:

i) Grade 3 (T I/TVT II/TVT III/T II) $996 monthly increase before tax at the Minimum Point or a salary of about 85% of the ELM figure;

ii) Grade 4 (T III/TVT IV/Sen T) $1253 monthly increase before tax at the Minimum Point or a salary of about 84% of the ELM figure;

iii) Grade 7 (P (Prim), VP (Sec)) $1720 monthly increase before tax at the Minimum Point or a salary of about 70% of the ELM figure.

10.) Teachers have No allowances or perks unlike other public sector workers, including the Protective Services;

11.) TTUTA continues to seek to obtain settlement teacher salaries which are as close to the ELM salaries as is possible, especially at Grades 3 and 4. Settlement salaries must recognize the critical role of teachers in education and national development;

12.) Teachers should turn out in their thousands in Port of Spain on Thursday November 29 and send a strong message to the CPO and the Government;

13.) Teachers should continue on a high level of mobilization and stand ready for further action and reflection in the days and weeks ahead."
