Dear Worker The Minister of Labour recently said "there were hundreds of workplace accidents occurring annually" with their consequent injuries, dismemberment, loss of pay and inability to lead a healthy lifestyle thereafter. What you need to know is that even though you are not under the protection of a union at present, YOU HAVE RIGHTS UNDER THE LAW. You can and must become informed, knowledgeable and better organized to protect your life and limb. It is important to know your rights. According to the Laws of Trinidad and Tobago, specifically, Occupational Safety and Health Act Chapter 88:08 Section 25E states: Every employer in consultation with the representatives of his employees shall establish a safety and health committee at an industrial establishment in accordance with this section where- (a) There are twenty-five or more persons employed at that establishment; or (b) The Chief Inspector on the basis of prescribed criteria, directs the establishment of such a committee at the industrial establishment where fewer than twenty-five persons are employed The National Workers Union has a policy to organize the unorganized, those workers, who, for whatever reason, have not been able to join a union as a collective. We are proposing that you contact us and we will give you the necessary information to organize and protect your life and limb, free of charge, with no strings attached. We are ready to hold group sessions, preferably on a Saturday or for that matter, any mutually agreed day or time with the expressed purpose of making you, the individual or group, more aware of your rights to a safe and healthy workplace as prescribed by LAW.
