JTUM join forces in a broad based national front

The Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM) last week issued a statement calling for the removal of the Attorney General, the Minister of Justice and the Minister of National Security. We further stated that “Should the Prime Minister fail to remove these three Ministers within 48 hours then the JTUM stands ready to join forces in a broad-based national front to determine the necessary mass actions towards this objective.” Since that time has expired it is now imminent that action must be taken.

Last night the JTUM deliberated extensively on the Prime Minister’s refusal to dismiss the Attorney General. We also discussed letters from both the Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Keith Rowley, MP requesting a meeting with JTUM and the Political Leader of the Movement for Social Justice, David Abdulah calling for a ‘Roundtable’ meeting.

The JTUM has written to Dr. Keith Rowley and David Abdulah proposing a meeting for Friday at 4 p.m. We have also agreed to include other civil society organizations and other interest groups. This is in keeping with our broad based national front approach.

We are dissatisfied and appalled at the Prime Minister’s response which sought to justify her refusal to remove the Attorney General. For reasons best known to her, the Prime Minister has once again placed her credibility on the line. For his role and involvement in the entire disgraceful affair she is without option in the matter, he must be dismissed. We further maintain our stand that the Minister of National Security for his boundary-less arrogance, contempt and disrespect for the President and the Clergy must also be dismissed.
