MEDIA RELEASE

19 SEPTEMBER, 2012

JTUM CALLS FOR THE REMOVAL OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL, MINISTER OF JUSTICE AND THE MINISTER OF NATIONAL SECURITY

The Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM) met last night (Tuesday September 18) and deliberated extensively on the way forward on the issues surrounding Section 34.  Firstly the JTUM condemns outright in the strongest possible terms the obscene and surreptitious attempt by the government to facilitate the freeing of their major party financiers. The clandestine manner in which Section 34 was proclaimed speaks volumes with regards to the level of disrespect, contempt and dis-regard for our democracy and by extension all the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

We reject outright the reasons advanced by the government in particular the Minister of the Justice the Hon. Herbert Volney and the Attorney General, the Hon. Anand Ramlogan. It was simply a shameless display of dishonesty at the highest order and a huge insult for the intelligence of the people.

We note with grave concern the overwhelming perception that the law is there to facilitate the rich and party financers and does not protect the poor ordinary working people.

The JTUM strongly and unconditionally supports the numerous calls for the immediate removal of the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General.

The JTUM also calls for the removal of Minister Jack Warner for his attack on the President Maxwell Richards and Dean Colin Samson. His boundary-less arrogance and unenviable record of challenge with honesty renders him no moral authority to criticize anyone. And furthermore, for his latest disrespect and contempt for the constitutional structures and the Clergy, We call on the Prime Minister to remove him immediately.

Should the Prime Minister fail to remove these three Ministers within 48 hours then the JTUM stands ready to join forces in a broad-based national front to determine the necessary mass actions towards this objective.
