On July 12, 2013, Bryan St. Louis, Acting Secretary General of the Communication Workers Union issued the following media statement:

The Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in Chapter 1 establishes the Recognition and Protection of Fundamental Human Rights and Freedoms. In this instance reference is made to the freedom of thought and expression and the freedom of the Press.

In that regard the Communication Workers’ Union publicly denounces the blatant, obscene and brazen interference in the operations of the media by the People’s Partnership Government which culminated in the recent direct attack on media workers at the Trinidad Guardian Newspaper.

The Communication Workers’ Union views this development as an attempt to intimidate these media workers’ so that exposure on alleged acts of corruptions, misbehavior in public office and poor Governance would not be brought to the attention of the public.

The freedom of the press is clearly enshrined in our constitution and any attempt to muzzle our media worker’s must be condemned out rightly. The People’s Partnership has clearly displayed that it has no intention of placing workers at the centre of development as promised in its manifesto. In fact their actions since assuming office in May 2010 have revealed a pattern of intimidatory tactics which poses a threat to the democracy of our twin Island Republic.

The Communication Workers’ Union as a Progressive Working Class Institution stands in solidarity with all media workers as they go about their journalistic duties in an efficient and professional manner so that the Public could be made aware of all issues inclusive of those impacting negatively on the affairs of the state.

We say to all media workers stand up for your rights; do not compromise your principles in the face of Political intimidation. Perform your duties fearlessly. Expose the facts and let the truth be told.
